Overview

1. Isolations

What it Means: Isolations are a core technique in belly dance, where one part of the body moves independently of the rest. For example, you might isolate your hips while keeping your upper body still, or focus on moving your chest while your hips remain stationary.

Why It’s Important: Isolations are fundamental to creating the fluid, controlled movements belly dance is known for. They build body awareness and precision, which are essential for executing more complex moves.

2. Shimmies

What it Means: Shimmies are rapid, vibrating movements, often performed with the hips. A basic hip shimmy involves shaking your hips up and down quickly while keeping the rest of your body relaxed and still.

Why It’s Important: Shimmies are not just visually striking; they also enhance stamina and loosen up the hips. For beginners, mastering a shimmy can feel like a milestone in your belly dance journey!

3. Figure 8s

What it Means: This involves drawing a figure-eight shape with your hips. There are several variations, including horizontal figure 8s (hips moving side to side) and vertical figure 8s (hips dipping and rising).

Why It’s Important: Figure 8s showcase the elegance and fluidity of belly dance. They’re often used in slow, sensual sections of performances to captivate the audience.

4. Undulations

What it Means: An undulation is a smooth, wave-like motion through the torso. It typically starts from the chest, rolls through the abdomen, and finishes at the hips.

Why It’s Important: Undulations demonstrate control and grace. They’re commonly used in both modern and traditional belly dance styles to convey emotion and storytelling.

5. Hip Drops and Lifts

What it Means: Hip drops involve lowering one hip sharply while keeping the other stationary, while lifts are the reverse action. These movements are often used to add accents to choreography.

Why It’s Important: Drops and lifts bring dynamism to a performance. They’re great for adding texture to your dance and are often combined with shimmies or traveling steps for a dramatic effect.

6. Arabesques

What it Means: Though more common in ballet, arabesques are also used in belly dance to extend the body. They involve balancing on one leg while the other is extended behind you, paired with graceful arm movements.

Why It’s Important: Arabesques add elegance and length to your posture, helping you create captivating lines and shapes on stage.

7. Chest Circles

What it Means: A circular motion created by isolating the chest, while keeping the rest of the body still.

Why It’s Important: Chest circles add an elegant upper-body element that complements hip-focused techniques.

8. Shoulder Shimmies

What it Means: Quick, alternating movements of the shoulders, creating a shimmering effect.

Why It’s Important: Shoulder shimmies bring playful energy to your dance and are a great way to engage the audience.

9. Snake Arms

What it Means: A smooth, wave-like motion of the arms, resembling the slithering motion of a snake.

Why It’s Important: Snake arms add a hypnotic, expressive quality to your performance, enhancing your connection with the audience.
